Gateway to the Redwoods
Willits sits in Little Lake Valley in the middle of Mendocino County, at about 1,390 feet on Highway 101, some 23 miles north of Ukiah. The arch over the main street reads “Gateway to the Redwoods,” and the town is the eastern end of the Skunk Train line through the redwood forest to Fort Bragg. Seabiscuit lived out his last years at Ridgewood Ranch, a few miles south.
Ranchers who settled the valley in the 1850s made their living from cattle and timber. Snow is occasional, with Willits averaging under 4 inches a year, but one wet snowfall on heavy branches is enough to break them.
Big trees, bigger lots
Out here a property is often a few acres with tall conifers close to the house and plenty of dead wood at the back. That is the kind of work that justifies the drive from Cobb. Trees too close to a roof come down in sections from our tracked spider lift; dead and leaning trees farther out are felled and chipped; brush and stumps go with the excavator. See tree removal and log and debris removal.
We will not pretend Willits is next door. It is the far edge of where we work, so a single small trim usually makes more sense with a crew in town. For a larger removal, or a cleanup that takes a day or more, ask us.
Logs worth milling
Willits grew up on timber, and a lot of the wood that comes off a property here is worth more than firewood. Robert is a CalFire Licensed Timber Operator who fells selectively, taking one tree without hurting its neighbors. Sound logs can ride back to R2’s sawmill and return as boards, a shed or a bench, and the scraps become mulch and soil. Ask about milling and custom builds when you call.
