At the foot of Konocti
Soda Bay sits at the base of Mount Konocti on the south shore of Clear Lake, about seven and a half miles east-southeast of Lakeport. It started as a mineral springs resort; by 1910, Soda Bay Springs could take 150 guests. Today it is an unincorporated community of about 1,160 people, and the census area also takes in the Riviera West subdivision up the hill. Soda Bay Road is the way in and out, winding along the water between the mountain and the lake, so compact gear beats a long rig here.
Lake cabins and the trees around them
If your place is an older lake cabin or a house on a narrow shoreline lot, the trees around it have probably been growing a lot longer than anyone has been watching them. They tower over roofs, push into decks and lean toward the water. Common calls here:
- A big tree over the roof or deck that has started dropping limbs. See tree trimming.
- A leaner after a windy winter, or a tree that has died over the summer. See tree removal.
- A limb or a whole tree on the cabin after a winter blow; we answer day and night. Details on the emergency page.
- Brush and dead wood on the Konocti side of the lot. See defensible space.
What happens to the wood
R2 runs a full circle: nothing goes to waste. Good logs can go to our sawmill and come back as boards, or as a shed or a coop. You can keep firewood. The rest is chipped, and the chips become wood mulch and soil that goes back under trees. On a small lake lot, that also means no brush pile left behind for you to deal with; the crew rakes up and hauls off before they leave.
