The Mendocino County seat

Ukiah is the county seat and the largest city in Mendocino County, with 16,607 people at the 2020 census. It sits at about 630 feet in the valley of the Russian River, roughly 60 miles north of Santa Rosa. Bartlett pear orchards once covered much of the valley; today grapes are the main crop.

Summers here are hot. The valley reaches 90 degrees on about 61 afternoons in an average year, and close to 39 inches of rain falls in a normal winter. A tree that bakes all summer and then stands in soaked ground through January is the one that drops a limb or tips over in the first hard wind.

Why a Lake County crew drives over

To be straight about it: R2 is based in Cobb, and most of our work is around Clear Lake. Ukiah is a longer drive, so the jobs that make sense here are the bigger ones. Think of a tall tree over a house that has to come down in pieces, several removals on one property, or a ranch parcel full of dead trees and brush. Our tracked spider lift, chipper and excavator travel together, and a full day of work is what makes the trip worth it for you and for us.

The easiest start is a text: a few photos of the trees, what stands under them, and your address. Robert will tell you plainly whether the job fits and when the crew could come over. See tree removal and land clearing.

The 2017 fires north of town

In October 2017 the Redwood Complex fires burned through Redwood Valley and Potter Valley, the communities just north of Ukiah. They burned more than 36,000 acres, destroyed nearly 350 homes and forced 8,000 residents to leave. If you live in the hills above the valley, plan defensible space work for spring: dead trees out, low limbs cut up, brush chipped on site. Sound logs from a big removal do not have to be wasted either: our sawmill can turn them into lumber (more on milling).

Questions From Ukiah

Do you really come all the way to Ukiah?

For the right job, yes. Larger removals, several trees at once or acreage clearing make the drive worth it. Text photos and your address first and Robert will tell you honestly whether it is a fit.

Do I need a permit for tree work in Ukiah?

If you are inside city limits, ask the City of Ukiah. Out in the county, ask Mendocino County. The rules are theirs, and we schedule around whatever they need from you.
