The south end of the county

Middletown sits in the valley at the south end of Lake County, named for being roughly halfway between Lower Lake and Calistoga. It is lower, warmer and more open than the mountain above it, with town lots close to the center and ranch and pasture land spreading out around it. Harbin Hot Springs lies to the northwest.

What the Valley Fire left behind

On September 12, 2015 the Valley Fire came off Cobb Mountain and into Middletown the same night, destroying scores of homes and businesses. Harbin Hot Springs burned too. A lot of families rebuilt, and many of the trees that were left standing have had ten years to show how badly they were hurt.

A scorched pine or oak can keep green needles or leaves for years and then start dropping big limbs, or die from the roots up. If you have one near the house, a fence or the driveway, it is worth having it looked at. Robert will tell you plainly whether it can stay with some trimming or whether it should come out.

Jobs that come up around Middletown

  • Burned and dead trees at the back of rebuilt lots, taken down and chipped or hauled. See tree removal.
  • Pasture and acreage clearing with our own excavator, plus grading and drainage. See land clearing.
  • Log piles and burn piles nobody got to, hauled off or chipped. See log and debris removal.
  • Fire season prep around homes and outbuildings. See defensible space.

If you want to keep the wood, we can mill a good log into boards at our sawmill or let you keep the firewood. Ranch owners often ask for chips spread on a muddy lane or around a garden instead of hauled away, which is easy while the chipper is already running.

Questions From Middletown

My oaks survived the Valley Fire but have been losing limbs. Should they come out?

Not always. Some fire scarred trees are fine with the dead wood taken off; others are hollow at the base. Robert looks at the trunk, the roots and what is under the tree before he recommends anything.

Do you take on bigger properties outside Middletown?

Yes. Acreage work is a good fit for the excavator and the chipper: dead trees, brush, grading and hauling, done in one visit where we can.
