The county seat on the west shore
Lakeport is the county seat of Lake County, incorporated in 1888, and it sits on the western shore of Clear Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake wholly inside California. Around 5,000 people live in town, on streets that run from the lakefront and downtown up into the neighborhoods behind them.
Lakefront and in-town lots
Trees by the water grow toward the light, which usually means out over the lake, a dock or a boathouse. Taking one of those down is a lowering job, not a felling job: the crew works from the tracked spider lift and brings the wood down piece by piece so none of it ends up in the water or through a dock.
In the older parts of town, the lots are narrow and the big trees were there before the garage, the fence and the power drop. A side gate is often the only way in, which is where a compact lift beats a bucket truck parked on your lawn. Trimming clears limbs off roofs and lines; removal handles the tree that has to go.
Inside city limits
Because Lakeport has its own city government, the City of Lakeport is the place to ask about tree rules before anything comes out, especially a tree near the street or a sidewalk.
The summer of 2018
In July 2018 the Ranch Fire, part of the Mendocino Complex, put Lakeport under a mandatory evacuation. If your place backs onto grass and brush in the hills west of town, defensible space work before fire season is worth doing: low limbs cut up, brush cut back and chipped, dead trees gone. And when winter wind puts a tree on the house, call or text any hour for emergency work.
